Thank you to AlboPepper – Drought Proof Urban Gardening who made this video and states about how much cheaper, easier and efficient Next-Gen Quantum LED Panels are and made my review on the Spider Farmer LED Grow Light possible:  “Modern LED grow lights are so efficient that you can use them to replace older, higher wattage LEDs from just a few years back. This quantum style LED panel has outperformed my expensive LED that consumes TWICE the power! In this unpaid product review, I unboxed and measured the light levels from a new Spider Farmer LED grow light. I received the light at a reduced cost and decided to take objective PAR readings to show how much brighter these new quantum LEDs are!”

Spider Farmer Grow Light Review

Some low-end LEDs only offer a single diode color but the Spider Farmer board uses a custom blend, optimized for plants. A nice broad spectrum, rather than a few isolated bands. Overall, the light looks fairly white. So it’s easy on the eyes and it’s good for accurately monitoring plant health.

What really counts, though, is how much light this Spider Farmer throws – and this light is BRIGHT! Objective measurements were taken with an Apogee SQ-520 quantum sensor. It gives more accurate readings when comparing custom LED spectrums. Strong consistent numbers at 24 inches were observed. With an average PPFD of 375, running this light at a cycle of 18 hrs on / 6 hrs off would produce a DLI of 24.3.

The SAMSUNG Diodes enable this light to boast efficacy of 2.7 micromoles per joule. For an entry-level, consumer-grade grow light, that’s really good! A couple of years ago LED manufacturers were excited to offer 2.0 or 2.2 ratings.

May I just say that the first two lower-rated Spider Farmer Grow Lights are REALLY priced well!

Is Upgrading Really Worth It?

So what’s a realistic example justifying an upgrade? Let’s say that you have an older LED, rated at 1.8 micromoles per joule. It’s 150 watts. Multiply them for a total output of 270 PPF. This SF-1000 draws 100 watts at 2.7, so it too would output 270 PPF. Thus, this LED’s newer Samsung diodes should enable it to replace a 150 watt LED or maybe a little higher. I would say you could replace a 200 to 250-watt model if it’s from 2016 or older.

Keep in mind that many LED sellers give inaccurate wattage specs! They might call their light 1000w while saying that it actually consumes a much lower wattage. That inflated number is a false wattage spec. Just look at the ACTUAL power consumed and ignore those fake wattages! Spider Farmer has been cautious with their listing to make sure they aren’t deceiving customers. (It’s nice to see an LED seller who has some integrity.)

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I think the Spider Farmer Grow Light will be an excellent upgrade for almost any small growing space, as I hope this review shows. It’s a great option for lettuce and nicely sized seedlings in a 3 foot by 3-foot area. If you’re growing high-end fruiting or blooming plants (like hemp or its cousins), it offers entry-level performance in a 2 foot by 2-foot area. NOTE:  Their listing also shows a two-panel and even FOUR-panel version which would really get the job done for larger, high-end applications!  See the Amazon ad stripe below.

TERMINOLOGY NOTE:

This light is NOT a “Quantum Board”. as Horticulture Lighting Group has registered that term as a trademark. So please do not confuse the Spider Farmer panels with actual “Quantum Boards” as they are in NO way affiliated with each other! Quantum styled panels have a large number of LEDs, spread out over a large area, in contrast with point sources such as COBs. Quantum is simply a common word in the English language used to describe “a large quantity” of hundreds of diodes per light fixture. – https://www.dictionary.com/browse/quantum.

After having lived in Canada's most northerly territory of Nunavut where outdoor gardening is nigh impossible, I started down my adventure of indoor gardening. I hope you find the various methods as exciting as I do!

  1. Hi

I’m glad I found your article and website today, I moved to Canada 10 years ago and today I know how the long winters can lack of sun light.

My husband and I love to grow our garden during the warm months of the year and we miss having fresh organic vegetables during winter, we have been trying to grow a few vegetables inside with no luck, I was looking to find some good information about how to grow some vegetables indoors to see if we can do it.

I guess you might have a post about how to grow a family garden indoors, I would love to read it and learn how to do it.

    • Honestly, Alajandra, the whole web site is about different hydroponic grow solutions indoors.  If you just want some herbs or a bit of lettuce/chard/bok choy then this article is for you:  https://myindoorgrowsystems.co…  If you want to grow more of a garden then this link is for you:  https://myindoorgrowsystems.co… but you WILL need one of the grow light suggestions that I have offered.  Frankly, EDs are the longest lasting and most cost-efficient out there.

  2. hello there. this is great information and i wish to really thank you for bringing this to light. i must confess i actually thought it was Quantum Board. but then considering the spectrum level, do you think it can be used for other major purposes? i mean, what would it be like, using the spider farmer light for a different purpose. would it serve?

    • Hiya Daren,  It really depends on the purpose.  You can e-mail me at thompson.darlene@gmail.com if its private but I did state that it and its larger brother would be fine with hemp (and its cousins).  I’m really not sure what other purposes you might mean!  I would LOVE to know!

  3. it should be the best option since it’s easy on the eyes and good for accurately monitoring of plant health. but then i think there are not much competing brands. and since this next generation tech it holds much value. but one thing is that the pricing could become a concern in time for maintenance. dont you think so? what are the options?

    • Actually, Benny, the pricing on this unit is much lower than comparable name brands.  Also, if one diode goes out, ou don’t have to re[lace the entire light (as with some) just the diode (which is pretty cheap).  Even though LEDs are slightly more expensive than Metal Halides, the upfront cost more than pays for the power bills.  Trust me on this one.

  4. Does the spider farmer deliver warm or cool light, and what is the difference?  Is the spider farmer a full spectrum light or only deliver some of the light spectrum?  100watts seems like a lot of power consumption.  What is the electricity cost comparison with 24watt version considering the plant volume produced?

    • Hiya Aaron – the video explains the wattage vs power consumption quite well.  Basically, this light will give you full-spectrum, brilliant coverage at much less the cost of the lights and the power bill.  I really encourage people to watch the video to see.  Cheers!

  5. Hi Darlene. Up until this point I hadn’t thought that it would be reasonable to replace a 200-watt model from 2014. But your post has shown me it’s not only reasonable because it will impact our pocket for good in the long run, it’s also a superior LED guaranteeing more light. Thanks for guiding me about this.

    • You betcha, Ann – I’m installing Metal Halides to my regret (somewhat) and had to rewire my house, costing $4,000 – I recommend to EVERYBODY now to get the most energy-saving LEDs now.

  6. HI! I’m monitoring plant health. And I have been reading posts were they recommend this super efficient Spider Farmer LED. They state that for the specific case of lettuce, which is also my case, this is a great option. I was surprised you were reviewing this exact same LED, and you also mentioned the same thing.

    • Hiya Abel – these lights are just so good and cost-efficient that they blow the other name brands out of the water!

  7. So I have never thought to grow plants inside before and never would have known that you can use lights to act as the sun.  I always thought that for plants to grow you would need the effect from the sun.  With led growing lights do you need to leave them on 24 hours a day or do you cycle them on and off like the sun rise and sunset?  Some of you info about the reading of the light upgrades from just a few years ago is amazing.  It is like LED lights can’t get any better then here I read that after a year or two they are better.  Also a quick last question do you need a light over each single plant that you are trying to grow or will this be ok for say a dozen plants.  Thank you for all the great information and I will look to find more on it in the future.

    Thank you

    Douglas

    • Hiya Douglas!  Actually, you want the lights to mimic the summertime sun – so, an 18 hour light period interspersed with a 6-hour dark period is great.  Some people do 12 and 12 but I believe that the 18-6 does better.  As per your last question, this 1000 watt light will cover a 2 foot by 2 foot square of plants so it depends on plant size.  Of course, if you go for one of the stronger models that they have, they will cover a larger area and more plants.  It really depends on what type of plants you are growing and how large they are.    Cheers!

  8. Spider Farmer LED Grow Lights have a kind of scary name, but they sound absolutely perfect for indoor growers! I light that can almost think about what is best for the plant it lights. I would truly love to see this in action. I didn’t know that sellers were allowed to be deceptive about wattage. I used to always take the advertised wattage as gospel. Thank you for telling us the truth. I definitely want one of these Grow Lights now!

    • Thank you!  Yes, wattage is TOTALLY deceiving and these lights are priced much lower than comparable quantum lights of its class.  I give these an A+

  9. Hello Darlene, thank you for sharing this review of Spider Farmer LED Grow light. Technology keeps advancing these days and at a fast pace within a short period of time. I read about grow lights some few weeks ago and was pretty amazed that LED (Light Emitting Diodes; I studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering in school) can be used to grow plants. LEDs are bright and save lots of energy as they work with DC voltage (Direct Current).

I love the Spider Farmer LED Grow light since it is bright, safe for the eyes and saves power too.

    Compliment of the season.

    • Thank you so much!  I really do think at some point that LEDs will take over from MH and HPS lights soon due to the HID wattage usage.

  10. This, for me, is a very timely article.  We have a small, 22 plant hydroponic system which we built.  The summer months are fine for growing.  We are trying to get at least two crops of lettuce, peppers and spinach.  However, with the shortness of days we need artificial lighting.  We have been looking at different systems.  I did not notice anything about the weight of the unit.  I was also wondering if it could be used in conjunction with an extension cord to a normal 110 outlet.  I appreciate the specs that you offered and the comparisons.  Thanks for the article..

    • Hiya Anastzja!  I was living in even worse conditions where the summer wouldn’t even grow veggies in the far north.  With indoor hydroponics, you should be able to get 3 crops per year at a minimum.  I’m not sure of the exact weight of these units but by the looks of them, they are far less heavy than many a quantum board I have seen so you should be safe.  Remember that as an indoor grower YOU are in charge of every aspect of your plant’s health from nutrients, air temperature and humidity to lights and you are trying to mimic good summer conditions.

  11. Hi and thanks for the advice,

We made our own natural fertilizer but weren’t very successful at all. I’m not sure exactly what was lacking but as per what you described, the plants weren’t as strong or long lasting as when we’ve used store bought fertilizer.

We’re still farming worms and using the castings but have to supplement with store bought fertilizer which I feel isn’t ideal
